Do You Know : Infantry Day 27 Oct

               The 68th Infantry Day will be held on 27 Oct 14. It was on this momentous day in 1947, when the princely State of Jammu and Kashmir was under attack by the tribal raiders supported by the troops of the newly formed Pakistani Army, that the first Infantry contingent of Indian Army, the troops of the 1 SIKH Infantry Battalion, landed at Srinagar Airfield and fought a courageous battle to liberate the Kashmir valley from the intruders. To commemorate this gallant action by the Infantry, October 27 is celebrated as the Infantry Day.

             

              The heroes and martyrs of the undaunted Infantry have not only upheld the hallowed traditions of our Army, but also have enriched them by their glorious deeds of valour and sacrifice. The infantry has always stood by the nation in times of crisis and the Infantrymen had displayed utmost dedication, courage and selfless devotion to duty.

              October 1947. Pakistan resorted to violence and plunder in J&K under the garb of an uprising. The Pakistani misadventure codenamed ‘Operation Gulmarg’ was launched by Pakistan Army with tribal militias and ex-armymen. Pakistan’s plan emerged on 22 October 1947, when intruders entered J&K, armed with modern weapons and unlimited supply of ammunition. On signing of the Instrument of Accession on 26 October 1947, the Indian Army airlifted troops into Srinagar on 27 October 1947. InfantryDay.

Fought in rugged, high altitude and snow bound areas; Indian Army launched operations with vigour and were sustained through exemplary courage and self-reliance. Indian Army reclaimed most of what was infiltrated till 31 December 1948. Pakistan illegally occupies some areas of Jammu & Kashmir which is called Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK).

 

72nd INFANTRY DAY CELEBRATIONS

               General Bipin Rawat COAS greets all ranks of Infantry on the 72nd Infantry Day. Infantry, The Queen of the Battle, celebrates 27 October each year as the Infantry Day. On this very day, in response to the first threat to the sovereignty and territorial Integrity of our Nation, the first elements of the Indian Infantry landed in Srinagar and resolutely defended Kashmir from falling into the enemy hands. To commemorate this gallant action of the Infantry, 27 October is celebrated as Infantry Day.
