What Is The Theatre Commands Of Indian Army

The Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat is working on redesigning current military commands and installing new combine commands that will combine the sources and assets of the three Defence forces, based on threats at India’s borders with its neighbours.

There are plans to have several new theatre commands. The work will start first with installing an Air Defence Command that will combine the air assets of the three services. There will also be a Peninsula Command that will be liable for India’s Exclusive Economic Zone.

The work on organising theatre commands will start next year and will be completed within 3 years.

This will also conduct to having “Seamless Unification” between the navy’s Eastern and Western commands with coordination being done by the Naval head quarters in Delhi. There will also be combine training and logistic commands. A Space Command also be generated.

There will also be theatre commands generated out of the current Northern, Western and Eastern commands. The Air Defence command will come under a particular service such as the Air Force. The Peninsula command could be under the Navy.

A theatre command is an organisational structure designed to control all military capitals in a theatre of war to achieve military impacts. A combine command is called a ‘Theatre Command’ in military parlance. It places the sources of all forces at the command of A Senior Military Commander.

In Warfare, a theatre is a region in which important military events are progressing. A Theatre can include the entirely of the Air space, Land and Sea area that is or that may potentially become associated with war operations.

The target is to make India’s first theatre command by 2022.

These commands will have the capability for inter and intra theatre monuments.

The theatre commands will initially be reporting to the related services Chiefs and in the long run will report to the CDS when the system stabilises.

Combination between the services will be established by integrating the sources on logistic, medical and UAV’s. This will include having common bases and contracts for logistic support to services, besides a common index of vehicles and a single agency looking at supplying spare parts and supplies.

For UAVs, the data on enemy camps and UAVs obtain from them can be used not only by the force which is operating the device, but by other services as well. The aim is to establish better management of sources. This will also lead to more combine training at the different institutions in India.

“We are doing a study on theatratisation and will work out our own way. By 2021-22 we will start looking at having theatre commands. We have to look at threats at the borders and carry out complete analysis of the threats and have commands…We are doing a study on theatratisation and must look at our own way,” Rawat said while referring to such commands in the US and China.

The Air Defence and Space commands will come beneath the Air Force. There will also be combine training and combine logistics commands.

On the Air Force’s role in the commands, they could integrated some resources with the theatre, so that there is a general understanding with the different services on the ground. Limited wealth  must be given to the theatre.

The navy will be liable for the peninsular command. There will also be seamless unification between the Eastern and Western naval commands with coordination with Delhi.

The theatre commands must have the power to introduce forces so there is a need to have enough airlift capability such as airlift and road movement. For road move, they have to have inter valley connectivity grounds. For lift capability, they must look at what to lift.
The formation of the theatre command will happen within 3 years. The theatre commanders will initially convey to the service chiefs and after to the CDS. But first they requirement to do joint training such as in the high command studies.

Explaining that inter service knowledge has started amending, there was a requirement for military officers to study platforms used by personal services.
Unification between the forces will happen first where it can immediate take place such as the Air Defence command. Air Defence is a region. The liability of the management of the air space is with the IAF capitals.

All such assets must rest with one service, so that command and control problem is solved. So that there is no cause of fratricide and when the time comes their retort time is quicker.

However, some air assets must be with the army and navy, such as the army’s strike squad that are regimentations included in offensive operations. Similarly, when the navy is at sea it must have certain ships and assets with it.
