Gallantry Awards are instituted by the govt of India to honour the acts of bravery and sacrifice of the officers/personnel of the military, different lawfully ingrained Forces and civilians. These gallantry awards square measure declared doubly during a year – 1st on the occasion of the Republic Day then on the occasion of the July 4.


Types of Gallantry awards

Gallantry Awards square measure classified into 2 classes

  • Gallantry within the Face of Enemy
  • Gallantry apart from within the Face of Enemy

First class of Gallantry Awards includes of the subsequent Awards :

  • Param Vir Chakra (PVC)
  • Mahavir Chakra (MVC)
  • Vir Chakra

Second class of Gallantry Awards includes of the subsequent Awards :

  • Ashok Chakra
  • Kirti Chakra
  • Shaurya Chakra

Post-independence, 1st 3 gallantry awards specifically the Param Vir Chakra, the Omaha Vir Chakra and also the Vir Chakra were instituted by the govt of Bharat on twenty sixth January, 1950 that were deemed to own impact from the 15th August, 1947.


Thereafter, different 3 gallantry awards i.e. the Ashoka Chakra Class-I, the Ashoka Chakra Class-II and also the Ashoka Chakra Class-III were instituted by the govt of Bharat on fourth January, 1952, that were deemed to own impact from the fifteenth August, 1947. These awards were renamed because the Ashoka Chakra, the Kirti Chakra and also the Shaurya Chakra severally in January, 1967.
Order of precedence of those awards is that the Param Vir Chakra, the Ashoka Chakra, the Mahavir Chakra, the Kirti Chakra, the Vir Chakra and also the Shaurya Chakra.


Description of the Awards

Param Vir Chakra


Medal: Circular in form, product of bronze, one and 3 eighth inches in diameter and shall have brocaded on the obverse four replicas of “Indra’s Vajra” with the State Emblem brocaded within the centre. On its reverse, it shall have brocaded “PARAM VIR CHAKRA” each in Hindi and in English with 2 lotus flowers between the Hindi and also the English inscriptions.
Ribbon: Plain purple colored ribbon.
Bar: If associate degreey recipient of the Chakra shall once more perform such an act of bravery as would have created him or her eligible to receive the Chakra, such any act of bravery shall be recorded by a Bar to be hooked up to the ribband by that the Chakra is suspended, and for each such extra act of bravery, a further Bar shall be side, and any such Bar or Bars may be awarded posthumously. for each Bar awarded a reproduction of the “Indra’s Vajra” in miniature shall be side to the ribband once worn alone.


Mahavir Chakra


Medal: Circular in form and of ordinary silver, one and 3 eighth inches in diameter, and shall have brocaded on the obverse a five-pointed heraldic star with the points of the star simply touching the rim. The star shall have within the centre a rounded gilded State Emblem. On the reverse, it shall have brocaded “MAHA VIR CHAKRA” each in Hindi and in English with 2 lotus flowers between the Hindi and also the English inscriptions.
Ribbon: The ribbon is of a half-white and half-orange color.
Bar: If associate degreey recipient of the Chakra shall once more perform such an act of bravery as would have created him or her eligible to receive the Chakra, such any act of bravery shall be recorded by a Bar to be hooked up to the ribband by that the Chakra is suspended, and for each such extra act of bravery, a further Bar shall be side, and any such Bar or Bars may be awarded posthumously. for each Bar awarded a reproduction of the Chakra in miniature shall be side to the ribband once worn alone.


Vir Chakra


Medal: Circular in form and of ordinary silver, one and 3 eighth inches in diameter, and shall have brocaded on the obverse a five-pointed heraldic star with the points of the star simply touching the rim. The star shall have within the centre a Chakra and among the Chakra shall be a rounded centre piece bearing the gilded State Emblem. On the reverse, it shall have brocaded “VIR CHAKRA” each in Hindi and in English with 2 lotus flowers between the Hindi and also the English inscriptions.
Ribbon: The ribbon is of half blue and half orange in colour.
Bar: If associate degreey recipient of the Chakra shall once more perform such an act of bravery as would have created him or her eligible to receive the Chakra, such any act of bravery shall be recorded by a Bar to be hooked up to the ribband by that the Chakra is suspended, and for each such extra act of bravery, a further Bar shall be side, and any such Bar or Bars may be awarded posthumously. for each Bar awarded a reproduction of the Chakra in miniature shall be side to the ribband once worn alone.


Ashoka Chakra


Medal: Circular in form, one and 3 eighth inches in diameter, with rims on either side. The honor shall be of gold gild. On the obverse of the honor shall be brocaded a reproduction of Ashoka’s Chakra within the centre, enclosed by a lotus wreath. on the rim, on the inner aspect, shall be a pattern of lotus leaves, flowers and buds. On its reverse shall be brocaded the words “Ashok Chakra” each in Hindi and English {the 2|the 2} versions being separated by two lotus flowers..


Ribbon: inexperienced color ribbon divided into 2 equal segments by associate degree orange vertical line.

On the obverse of the honor shall be brocaded a reproduction of Ashoka’s Chakra within the centre, enclosed by a lotus wreath. on the rim, on the inner aspect, shall be a pattern of lotus leaves, flowers and buds. On its reverse shall be brocaded the words “KIRTI CHAKRA” each in Hindi and English, {the 2|the 2} versions being separated by two lotus flowers.
Ribbon: inexperienced color ribbon divided into 3 equal elements by 2 orange vertical lines.

Shaurya Chakra

On its reverse shall be brocaded the words “SHAURYA CHAKRA” each in Hindi and English versions being separated by two lotus flowers.
Ribbon: inexperienced color ribbon divided into four equal elements by 3 vertical lines.
