It was not immediately known how long Ajit Doval would stay in Kashmir
NEW DELHI: Two days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses the United Nations General Assembly in New York, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval landed in Srinagar on Wednesday. Mr. Doval, who will be in the valley for a couple of days, will make ground assessments and would be giving reports to the PM before his UNGA speech, a senior level officer has said.
Mr. Doval did not accompany PM Modi on his trip to America due to continuous developments in Jammu and Kashmir. He has been made in charge by the prime minister to keep everything in check as far as Jammu and Kashmir is concerned.
The National Security Advisor would not only be reviewing the security situation with all security agencies but will also review political detentions with the state administration.
Officers in the Home Ministry indicate that the government is no hurry to take any step as far as the detention of political leaders is concerned.
With the increase in the level of infiltration a big concern for the government, Mr. Doval will also focus on how to further seal gaps in the security grid along the Line of Control and the International Border.
In the last two months, as many as 60 terrorists have managed to sneak into India, sources say. In comparison, in the first seven months of the year, only 35 terrorists were able to sneak into Indian territory.
This is Mr. Doval’s second visit to Srinagar after August 5, when the government ended special status to Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated it into two union territories.
